Day 18 by FaceGrater
Day 18
I didn't get a chance to do a study yesterday so this is for yesterday which would have been day 18 of the 21 day art challenge. I decided to do a master study by John Singer Sargent.

Drop Ship by FaceGrater
Drop Ship
Here is at drop ship I was designing. Put it in back ground. I feel like too many pieces of mine are just vehicles floating in a vacuum. I changed it a bit from my thumbnail design. It just didn't translate well to the final image.

Day 17 by FaceGrater
Day 17

Day 17 of the 21 day challenge. This is a master study of a piece from the 17th century Flemish school called An Old Man Holding a Staff. Seemed like a fun study. He’s all wizard and gandalf like.

Day 16 Portrait Study by FaceGrater
Day 16 Portrait Study
Thought I would do another portrait study. This time focusing on values and capturing likeness. This is day 16 of the 21 day challenge and this is a portrait of actor Humphrey Bogart.

Day 15 by FaceGrater
Day 15
I've never been much of a portrait artist so for day 15 of the art challenge I thought I would attempt it. It looked good as a portrait but there are some differences between the reference and my painting that just really bug me.

My name is Jon. I'll keep it simple. I like to paint and I look forward to waking up everyday and painting. I love to paint landscapes as well as sci-fi and fantasy. I think it is fun to create new worlds and go places you could never go with your illustrations.

Loving your environments man :) surprised you don't have more views on here considering each painting is consistently well thought out.
Are you at an art school or all self taught?
Keep up the good work :)

Hey thanks for the kind words. I was in school for a few semesters (Academy of Art) and figured I could save some money and study on my own. I've been at it for about 4 years now. I'm glad you like my environments too!

Oh that's very interesting to hear :) I'm always curious as to whether or not art school is beneficial or if it is possible to
study it all by yourself as long as you are dedicated.
Do you find you've developed your skills a lot more by teaching yourself?

I think so, but then again that is how I learn best. Trial and error. I don't want to totally discount school. I learned more on my own than I did in school but the traditional path clearly just wasn't for me and my learning style. I know there are those that benefit greatly from art school. I just saw the loans I was racking up and felt I could keep myself motivated to get to now and beyond. I would recommend gumroad tutorials too. Dave Rapoza, Eytan Zana, and Maciej Kuciara all have superb tutorials for the price of a coffee and those really helped me. In fact here are some books you need to get if you want to learn on your own:

"Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" by Andrew Loomis
"Drawing the Head and Hands" by Andrew Loomis
"Digital Painting Techniques: Volume 1" Published by 3dTotal
"Digital Painting Techniques: Volume 2"
 Published by 3dTotal
"Digital Painting Techniques: Volume 3" Published by 3dTotal
"Human Anatomy For Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger
"Figure Drawing: Design and Invention" by Michael Hampton

Those books are the magic 7 that I have studied religiously for the past few years to get to now. Put aside around 2 hours a day to studies and you will be amazed by what you can do with time!

I very much dig those environment paintings of yours, but I gotta ask; are these settings for anything in particular, or did you just think them up on the spot?

They are for a game a buddy of mine and I are working on. Unfortunately we are both busy so it's been put on the back burner for now. I'm glad you like them!
